Guide to Diamond Shapes

Guide to Diamond Shapes

Choosing the right diamond cut is a crucial decision while selecting bridal jewelry, as the shape of the center stone defines much of your engagement ring's overall aesthetic. Your engagement ring is a piece that you’ll likely wear for many years to come, and thus should uniquely suit your distinctive stylistic preferences and personality. From the timeless appeal of round diamonds to the bold lines of emerald cuts, every style of engagement ring center stone offers their own unique charm. The way light reflects through the facets of the stone will affect its sparkle and brilliance, making it crucial to choose carefully before deciding on your ring’s center stone. If you’re struggling to make a selection from the available options, our experts at Pucci's Jewelers have curated a helpful guide to the various diamond cuts available in our collection to assist you in making a confident purchase that reflects your personal taste and style.

The Regal Princess

A striking balance of modern and traditional, the princess cut has become a popular choice for those seeking a sophisticated, yet contemporary engagement ring. Featuring sharp, clean lines, this square or rectangular cut maximizes sparkle with its 57-76 facets, expertly arranged to spectacularly reflect light from every angle. Developed in the 1960s, the princess cut is relatively new compared to other popular diamond shapes, but its eye-catching brilliance has quickly earned it favor among brides-to-be. Ideal for someone who loves a bold and symmetrical look, this cut pairs well with sleek, modern settings that exude a vibrant, confident energy.

The Classic Round

Known for its timeless appeal and unmatched brilliance, the round cut diamond has been the preferred choice for many couples for over a century. Crafted with 58 precisely arranged facets, its perfectly symmetrical shape beautifully reflects light, creating the most sparkle of any diamond cut. First perfected in the early 20th century, this classic cut speaks to tradition, making it ideal for those who appreciate elegance and refinement. Brides drawn to this shape tend to favor a universal, graceful style that transcends fleeting trends. The round cut’s versatility also makes it perfect for a variety of settings, ensuring the stone remains the focal point of any design, no matter how opulent.

The Bold Cushion

The cushion cut features soft, rounded corners and larger facets that offer a unique, pillow-like appearance, creating a romantic and vintage-inspired look that dates back to the 19th century. The 58 facets of this cut beautifully capture light, offering a softer sparkle compared to more angular cuts. The combination of this cut’s vintage shape along with the modern cutting techniques used with every diamond enhance their brilliance, creating a truly distinctive stone for any adornment. The cushion cut blends traditional elegance and timeless romance, and is an excellent option for those who are drawn to more classic designs or prefer a ring with a subtle, yet rich shimmer.

The Romantic Oval

A delightful twist on the classic round, the oval cut diamond brings a touch of elegance and an elongated shape that flatters the finger while providing a unique, modern silhouette. Brides drawn to the oval shape often love its graceful, elegant profile, and the way it balances tradition with a more contemporary edge. With 56-58 facets, this cut is designed to optimize light reflection while offering brilliance similar to a round cut. Popularized in the mid-20th century, this cut is perfect for someone who craves the timeless appeal of a brilliant diamond while also looking for something a bit different from the rest.

The Elegant Emerald

With its long, sleek lines and step-cut facets, the emerald cut delivers a look of understated sophistication and refinement. First appearing in the 1500s, this rectangular cut is famous for its spectacular "hall of mirrors" effect. The 57 facets of this cut are larger and fewer, giving the diamond a more dramatic, elegant glow. Ideal for someone with a love for vintage or art deco-inspired designs, the emerald cut exudes a sense of quiet luxury and confidence that is perfect for those who prefer a strong, bold aesthetic with an emphasis on clean lines and transparency.

The Distinctive Pear

A blend of round and marquise shapes, the pear shape offers a distinctive teardrop silhouette that’s both graceful and unique. Distinguished by its pointed tip and rounded base, this cut combines timeless elegance with a touch of whimsy. With 56-58 facets within each stone, the pear shape provides brilliant sparkle while offering a more distinctive look than more traditional shapes. Their origins date back to the 15th century, and they have remained popular for those who seek something classic yet unconventional. Brides drawn to the pear shape often appreciate its romantic shape and the way it elongates the finger, making it a beautiful choice for those seeking a diamond with a unique touch.
